Set up in 1972, Brisa is now Iberia’s major roadway concessionaire, holding 1,106km of concessioned roadways on 11 highways, up until December 31, 2032. Currently, 1000km are being operated on 10 highways, linking the country’s north and south, and the coastal region right up to the neighboring country’s border.

Right now, Brisa is bidding for four new highway concessions. It is awaiting the outcome of the award of a new 102km concession, while having been short-listed for two concessions corresponding to 62km, and submitted a bid for another one.

Aside from the construction, conservation and operation of highways and their respective service areas, Brisa provides its customers with a broad range of highway services, from automatic-collection tolls (Via Verde), to roadside assistance and automobile inspections.

In the international arena, Brisa, forming part of the core shareholder, holds a 17.04% stake in CCR-Companhia de Concessões Rodoviárias, the largest highways concessionaire in Latin America, with 1,290km of roadway concessions in Brazil. At present, CCR is short-listed for seven other roadway-concession tenders in Brazil. Brisa also has a stake in the capital of the Italian concessionaire, Autostrade.

Brisa is the fourth largest listed Portuguese company, with a market cap of over €3 billion. Quoted on Portugal's main capital index, the PSI 20, Brisa accounts for some12%, and is also quoted on the Euronext Top 100. In September, Brisa's stock started being quoted on the Dow Jones Sustainability STOXX Index.

Brisa is split into four business areas (Brisa — Auto-estradas; Brisa — Internacional; Brisa Serviços; and Other holdings), with its now in the process of being transformed into a holding company.

Operations

Via Verde Portugal — The automatic-toll system called Via Verde, created by Brisa in the 90s, is now a national toll-collection system, installed on all operators’ roadway infrastructure. Via Verde boasted more than 1.25 million customers in 2001 and accounts for 55% of highway tolls paid in Portugal.

Brisa Electrónica Rodoviária — Maintains electronic equipment and systems. Supplying, installing and commissioning electronic equipment and systems for highway-access control.

Services Controlauto — Provides periodical automobile inspections, with a network of 35 vehicle inspection (mandatory testing) centers nationwide, securing 17% of the market in Portugal.

Brisa Assistência Rodoviária — This newcomer to the Brisa universe is the successor to the customer assistance department set up in 1977, a pioneer in the development and application of safety procedures. It provides highway assistance services split into two main vectors: assistance and consulting. Assistance covers a complete range of services from breakdown and security to signing, as well as roadside assistance, emergency gasoline supply, surveillance and patrolling, and transportation and towing.

Consulting is a new activity covering three spheres: training, coordination and standardization. The first deals with signing courses for operators and construction companies. The second is for the management of signposting teams. And the third develops the potential of assistance and temporary signposting procedures manuals.
Marketing & sales Brisa Access — In the wake of Brisa having launched its innovative Via Verde toll-collection service in the 90s, Brisa made a further technological jump in launching the Access service. Access offers a broad range of services and facilities, namely the Via Verde system in parking lots and gas stations, 24-hour/day roadside assistance, as well as a series of additional services such as making reservations for inspections, servicing and quick repairs, delivering substitute vehicles, and renewal and substitution of vehicle documents.

MCall — Is a technological customer-contact company, with an in-bound customer service and web-enabled call center for the interactive accessing of sites, ensuring total interactivity with the customer.
