This innovative process, developed by INCM in cooperation with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico, is based on the use of two metallic discs of similar diameters but of fairly differing thickness, one of which (the plate) is placed on top of the bottom disc (thicker) and embedded into it at the coining stage.

Going through a series of three plastic molding operations, the embedding process is achieved by means of a special geometry created on the bottom disc's rim.

The first operation involves the pre-coining of the bottom disc, furnishing it with vertical rims higher than the plate's thickness.

The second operation bevels the pre-coined disc so as to give the rim an appropriate geometry for embedding the plate.

The third operation consists in the coining itself, while simultaneously coupling the plate onto the bottom disc, forming the coin rim and transposing the coin reliefs.

Assaying functions are defined and stipulated in Decree-Law N. 391/79 of September 20, 1979.

The Portuguese Assayer regulates and oversees the trading of objects made from precious metal, thereby guaranteeing the type and standard of the respective metals concerned.
