 The Cork Stopper

Of all the natural products transformed by industry, undoubtedly cork is one of the raw materials with the widest range of applications.

Since ancient times, its noble and rare characteristics have been recognized:

  • 100% natural,
  • innocuous to human health,
  • extremely elastic,
  • good heat insulator,
  • resists extreme temperatures,
  • does not decompose,
  • maintains its everlasting properties,
  • very light,
  • molds to any shape, for a variety purposes,
  • renewable resource, producing no waste when transformed.

The cellular structure of cork tissue affords the cork stopper a good adherence to the bottle neck, something that cannot be achieved by any synthetic product.

That is why the cork stopper is still the best-known closure for wine.

As a result of a Quality Assurance Policy put in place since its establishment, NORCOR holds the APCER (Portuguese Certification Organization) Quality Assurance System Certification, the IQNet certification for ISO 9002 and the Code International des Pratiques Bouchonnières.

 Production Process

Production is executed according to procedures specifically written for the company, adhering to the Cork Code for good manufacturing process - C.E. Liège (European Cork Confederation) Code, safety rules and legislation on packaging materials for food contact.

Careful selection of raw materials means that corks are tailor-made for each application.

All corks undergo a washing procedure to disinfect and enhance their appearance.

After drying, corks are sorted according to required grades, and can be printed or fire branded.

In order to ensure good sealing performance, a surface treatment is applied to the cork, which avoids penetration of wine, helps insertion during the bottling process, and allows easy pulling by the consumer.

For bottles with Bar Top corks, a capsule made of wood, plastic or metal is added to the cork.

Finished corks are vacuum packed in anti-oxidant polyethylene bags, ensuring their preservation.

For approval, finished lots pass through a vast inspection plan.

Every shipment carries a Technical Report, containing laboratory results and recommendations for storage and bottling.
