The Portucel Soporcel Group has a productive
capacity that exceeds 1 million tonnes of paper and
1.2 million tonnes of pulp, with 138,000 ha of forest,
and an annual turnover of over of 1 billion euros.
In this context, the Portucel Soporcel Group can proudly
announce the achievement of its three main goals: reinforcement
of leadership in the international pulp and paper sector;
improvement in efficiency and competitiveness; financial
and economical strengthening.
The Group's production structure is based at three
Mills, located in Setúbal, Figueira da Foz and
Cacia. These large-scale production units are equipped
with the most up-to-date technology and are a benchmark
for quality within the sector. Since 2003, the Portucel
Soporcel Group has been certified according to the
new reference standards for Quality Management System,
ISO 9000:2000, and the Laboratory Accreditation System,
NP EN ISO/IEC 17025.
The Portucel Soporcel Group is particularly noted
for its use of eucalyptus as the prime raw material
for its production of pulp, and for fine printing and
writing paper of superior quality, aimed at meeting
the requirements of the demanding European market.

The Portucel Soporcel Group is one of
the world’s major producers of Bleached Eucalyptus
Kraft Pulp (BEKP) and second in Europe. Globally considered
a benchmark for fibrous materials obtained from Eucalyptus
globulus, the pulp produced by the Portucel Soporcel
Group is especially suited to the production of papers
of the highest quality for printing and writing, as
well as for décor purposes.
As an environmentally-concerned company, our pulp-producing
processes have been designed to reduce the negative
impact of our mills’ activities on surroundings,
as well as forestry-related ones.

The Portucel Soporcel Group is responsible
for the management of 138,000 ha of forest, which represents
about 4.2% of Portugal’s forested area.
The company's forestry policy is based on a rational
use of available natural resources, strict observance
of environmental preservation, and respect for the
biosphere. This policy is implemented in line with
a multipurpose agri-forestry concept, in which farming,
livestock, and game are fully integrated in a harmonious
way. This policy makes the Portucel Soporcel Group
one of the most active Portuguese members of the World
Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Because of large investments, the industrial process
has very little impact on the environment, and the
paper produced is recognized for its top quality, namely
in terms of whiteness, strength, opacity and bulk.
Portucel Soporcel's mills are in line with the most
demanding international rules in terms of Quality and
Environment certifications - ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Set up in January 2000, Aliança
Florestal's corporate mission is to ensure the Group's
management of its forest resources and related activities.
Aliança Florestal manages an area of 180,000
ha, 70% of which is planted with Eucalyptus Globulus.
That forest spread supplies some 30% of Portucel's
wood needs.
Aliança Florestal is actively engaged in developing
a specific and ongoing R&D program, while it works
on improving the eucalyptus species in general. With
its nurseries providing clones for use on controlled,
high-yield plantations, the company can harvest timber
every 11 years. Those cycles are among the fastest
in the world. In order to make Portucel more than 50%
self-sufficient by 2005, Aliança Florestal is
committed to an important strategic forestation scheme.
Among other environmental projects within its corporate-responsibility
policy, the Portucel Soporcel Group supports and participates
in projects that aim to preserve the environment and
improve surrounding communities’ quality of life.
