OUR BACKGROUND

Tradition, quality and reliability have made us into a leading, fifth generation, company as a packer and exporter of canned fish products.

The abundance of tuna, sardines and mackerel to be found along the Portuguese coast motivated our founders to start-up a new business. By 1853 Ramirez was already operating its first cannery, one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

Soon after starting up the business , we became aware of the export potential that these new products could offer. Well before the 19th century was over, Ramirez sardines and tuna were a benchmark in the industry and acting as a Portuguese ambassador in many countries.

Brands such as RAMIREZ, COCAGNE, TEDDY, KID, TOMÉ, PESCADOR and others, are known worldwide. In many cases they figure among market leaders in various countries.

Major global importer and distributor chains entrust RAMIREZ to produce their own labels as well.

Our industry has undergone great technological improvements. And Ramirez has always been a pioneer. That is to say, when it comes to introducing new packing methods or launching new packaging materials for the first time worldwide. For instance, the two-part easy-open canned fish container - at first in aluminum, later in tin-plate.

Focusing on top quality products and consumer safety, Ramirez soon set up its own quality control laboratory. We did this in order to meet with ever-increasing market demands, as well as to ensure customer satisfaction.

Naturally, we strictly adhere to EU hygiene regulations. We also adhere to those set by the American FDA, the South Africa Bureau of Standards, and the Canadian Fisheries Department. The world's most exacting food chains, the military, hospitals and NGOs figure among our customers. That's because they are safe in the knowledge that they are buying a dependable, healthy product to deliver to the final consumer. Our products come packed not only in small cans but also in institutional ones.
