Founded in 1871, Companhia de Seguros Tranquilidade has for a very long time occupied a leading place in the nation’s economy, and today is one of Portugal’s major insurance groups. The reliability and strength it has built up over some 130 years, investing in quality and financial rigor, while constantly seeking new solutions, have always steered a course for the company to its major objective: tranquility for its customers.
 
Tranquilidade came into being during the 19th century as a fire insurer called Companhia de Seguros Tranquilidade Portuense – Companhia de Seguros Contra Fogo. Throughout the 20th century, the company expanded its business to cover all branches of insurance and widened its network of local offices.

Nationalized in 1975, Tranquilidade was part of a merger in 1979 involving two other insurance companies - Garantia Funchalense and A Nacional – which led to the setting up of Tranquilidade Seguros.
 
Re-privatized in 1990, in a highly successful operation, Tranquilidade re-established its decades-long links with the Espírito Santo Group, once again becoming part of a large financial group with international prestige. A valuable asset when aiming to be successful in today’s increasingly competitive global market.

In 1993, a time of high growth and dynamism in the Life insurance branch, Tranquilidade decided to spin-off this area into an independent company - Companhia de Seguros Tranquilidade-Vida. Right from the outset, it became one of the leaders on that particular market, continuing to sustain growth up to the present day.
 
Three years later, in 1996, Espírito Santo Seguros was set up. This move was geared to developing the Non-Life banking-insurance cross-selling side exclusively for Banco Espírito Santo and Banco Internacional de Crédito customers.
 
That same year of 1996, Tranquilidade opened a branch in Madrid, which employs the BES-Espanha branches as its distribution channel.
